    Note
    • He has been referred to by family members as Hugo von Platsky, and Victor Hugo Platz. There is no documentation at this time to support either of these references. His eldest son William went by that moniker, and used it on many official documents. Hugo the father never used anything but Hugo Platz.
In 1897, aged about 40, he was an owner of an apartment house in Berlin, and a large home on or near
Tegeler Chaussee (a street and tramline N/W of Berlin). He sold them both and purchased Stallbut Sanatorium (a curative water/health hot springs spa). It was located between Mannheim & Heidelberg near Weinheim, Germany. He went bankrupt when spring rains flooded the basement resulting in swarms of mosquitos which drove off the paying customers. This adventure only lasted about six months.
In 1898 he took the family except William, who stayed in Germany to learn the brewer's trade, to Rosario, Argentina (about 150 miles up the Parana River from Buenos Aires) where he was again a lawyer's assistant OR where he dumped his kids in a catholic convent for 9 months.
He is reported to have become a notary public (when he got married, and again in Rosario) in the USA and travelled to and from Germany to handle the affairs of other immigrants. However, he never once lists this as his occupation on a document.
His residences are listed as follows: Hugo and Emma built a big house in Valhalla, NY. The family lived there until about 1908. (Per son Erich); June 1909 through Jan 1916, he lists his address at 1107 W. 75th St. Perhaps he purchased this home after leaving Emma, but the records indicate that he never lived there. This house is still there.
The 1910 Census shows Emma in Redlands, California with children Hugo, Arthur, Erich (also shown as living with William and family in Los Angeles) and Elizabeth, and her mother Frieda. According to legend, Emma somehow managed to buy a Bavarian style restaurant in Redlands. One evening after work he packed up his suitcase and went back to Germany where he had a lady-friend who was more congenial than his wife. During his last years he brought this woman to live with him in a small town (Gabriel?) near Los Angeles.
The 1920 Census shows Emma at the 75th Street address with son Hugo, daughter Elizabeth, and mother Frieda.
The 1930 Census shows Hugo living in a very upscale neighborhood adjacent to the Woodland Hills Golf Course. By this time, Emma was deceased. Son Hugo had an apartment on Olive St downtown, but was known to have lived off and on with Meta on Florence Ave.
Physical Description as listed on ship manifests, Hair: Blonde, Eyes: Blue, Height: 5'8"
His German friends and relatives are listed as follows: June 1909 & March 1915, brother Albert Platz, Allenstein, East Prussia ; October 1913, friend Arnold Schultz, Berlin Germany; January 1916, friend Mrs. ? Lehmann, Bismarcketr #1, Hermsdorf, Germany (the other woman?), and his sister Mrs. L Leistenschlin of Germany.
No record can be found regarding the "other woman" or Hugo's death.
      Research is ongoing.
